Roman Aosta, a walk through history

Aosta can be reached in just a few minutes from Belvedere, by car or with the Aosta-Pila gondola. In its historic centre, Roman monuments, medieval corners and unique archaeological remains await you.
Roman Aosta

Discover Augusta Praetoria, in the heart of Aosta

Just a few minutes from the agriturismo, Aosta still preserves the layout of ancient Augusta Praetoria: walls, gates, theatre, cryptoporticus and Roman monuments that make the historic centre an ideal destination for a cultural visit during your stay at Belvedere.

During a stay at Agriturismo Belvedere, Aosta is one of the easiest and most interesting destinations to reach. From our agriturismo in Gressan, you can get to the city’s historic centre in just a few minutes, either by car or by using the Aosta-Pila gondola, which is also convenient thanks to the nearby Les Fleurs intermediate station.

Ancient Augusta Praetoria Salassorum was founded in 25 BC and, even today, the centre of Aosta largely preserves its Roman urban layout, with its ordered grid of streets and traces of the ancient city. A walk through the centre allows you to discover some of its most important monuments: the Arch of Augustus, the Porta Praetoria, the Roman Theatre, the Forum Cryptoporticus, the walls, the towers and the Roman bridge over the Buthier.

Visiting Roman Aosta means walking through a city where different eras coexist just a few steps from one another. Alongside the great Roman remains, you will find medieval corners, churches, squares and pedestrian streets that make the route enjoyable even for those who simply want to spend a few hours among culture, shops and city life.

The classic route through the historic centre can be enjoyed at a relaxed pace in half a day: you can start from the Arch of Augustus, pass through the Porta Praetoria, reach the Roman Theatre and then continue towards the Cryptoporticus and the Cathedral area. For those who want to explore further, the Regional Archaeological Museum completes the visit with finds and evidence linked to everyday life in the ancient city.

Roman Aosta is a perfect experience for alternating a day in the mountains with a cultural moment. After walking among the traces of Augusta Praetoria, returning to Belvedere brings you back to the quiet of Coassod, surrounded by nature, animals, welcoming rooms and our farm kitchen.
